Couples often ask me if there is any hope left for their marriage. My response, and a goal of my work with couples, is for therapy to be an experience energized by hopefulness. This is not wishful thinking, but rather a process that increasingly invites partners to try out new ways to interact and to deepen mutual understanding in order to restore a connection that has been lost. I have worked with couples for ten years, and currently more than half of my clients are couples. I provide therapy that promotes self-care and stress management. I encourage partners to identify patterns of interaction that are often based in our families of origin. Intimacy issues, conflict resolution, and anger management are other areas of focus in my work.

As a trained facilitator, I offer a class for couples based on the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP™). In September/October 2008, I am offering a premarital class as well as a regular PREP class. Please see my web site for details.

I also work as a clinical supervisor at Virginia Tech’s Center for Family Services, training therapist interns. I draw on my own marriage of 30 years for examples of what works and what doesn’t. Couples who are willing to work on their marriage may not feel hopeful, yet I have seen them rediscover their commitment and passion to one another, keeping hope very much alive.
