I facilitate couples by identifying the interactions between the two people, and particularly those interactions which get repeated over and over. Repeated interactions become patterns of behavior, and those patterns either help the couple or interfere. We will retain interactions that help, and substitute new interactions for those that interfere. Couples interact with each other in the sessions, replicating the familiar, frustrating situations at home. New solutions found in the sessions are then applied at home. This Gestalt Field Systems approach focuses on the two people as a unit, as a couple, and not on either person individually. There are two important implications of this productive approach: First, all repetitive problems are a function of the two people interacting together, the two people knowingly or unknowingly creating the problem. Second, new solutions must also be a function of the two people interacting in some different fashion. The couple is responsible both for the problems and for new solutions, not either person individually. I help each couple to identify their UNIQUE SYSTEM, that is their patterns of interactions. Each couple works on their system until it does what the couple wants it to do for them, and that is the signal to stop therapy. I apply this approach to married couples, unmarried couples, gay and lesbian couples, and to family sub groups. In addition, I offer individual psychotherapy.
