I help couples identify how they interact with each other, to see and understand their own patterns of behavior. Together we determine which patterns are helpful and which get in the way. We keep interactions which help, and substitute new interactions for those that interfere. Couples talk to each other in the sessions. We replicate familiar, frustrating situations which occur at home. New solutions found in the sessions are then practiced and applied at home. This Gestalt Field Systems approach focuses on the two people as a unit, as a couple, and not on either person individually. This leads to two important points: First, all repetitive problems result from the two people interacting together, the two people knowingly or unknowingly create the problem. Neither person is individually responsible for a couple's problem. Second, new solutions require that the two people interact in some new way. The couple is responsible both for the problems and for new solutions. I help each couple identify their UNIQUE SYSTEM, that is their patterns of interactions. Each couple works on their system until it does what the couple wants it to do for them, and that is the signal to stop therapy. I apply this approach to married couples, unmarried couples, gay and lesbian couples, and to family sub groups. In addition, I offer individual psychotherapy.
