I value the institution of marriage. It is foundational to the well being each family member, especially that of the children. Marriage is the ideal model for raising children and launching them into their own marriage. I tell couples one of the things they need to build longevity into their marriage is to love the institution of marriage just a little bit more than they love each other. I seek to get to know the couple by taking a history of dating, courtship, and family of origin. I want to hear from each spouse as to "why now?"--what happened to get you to this appointment? I will help them set goals for a healthy marriage that will thrive. I will assess skills for talking, listening, and conflict resolution as these are the fundamentals of communication. I will assess nurturing skills and basic attitudes of each spouse; for example, does each demonstrate an "I care about you" attitude, especially in conflict? I will give tests on personality and tests to determine how anger is used. I will give assignments to help discover insights, build skills, and self awareness. One of my favorite marital authors is John Gottman.
