My therapy practice consists of clients who come with a variety of personal problems and relationship concerns. Since the majority of my work is with individuals and couples encountering marital distress, I think about the strengths and stresses of spouse relationships and how a mate's behavior may be related to the behavior of their partner and others. Therapy consists of careful assessment followed by interventions designed to interrupt unhappy patterns and replace difficulties with something more positive. My core values as a therapist include my belief that relationships work best when they are considered lifelong and durable. Although some divorces are no doubt necessary for health and safety reasons, a good marriage gives both partners plenty of chances to give, as well as receive forgiveness over time. I also believe that when change is required it is better for spouses to "lean into" difficult circumstances and work toward solutions rather than walking away or shrinking back from life's demands. Finally, I believe these challenges are sometimes best managed in the framework of a nurturing, straightforward, confidential and respectful relationship with a therapist who is technically competent and morally sensitive to the implications their clients' behavior has on themselves and others.
