I have seen so many couples marry with the idea that they will automatically become blissfully happy when they marry. I have talked with couples who remember standing at the altar with the feeling of excitement and wonder with so much hope and love in their heart only to find that marriage is more difficult than they could have imagined. Once the honeymoon is over and daily problems in living come to the fore, couples find themselves with difficulties that seem insurmountable. There is an absence of tools that would be helpful to be with each other and live together in an authentic, loving, caring, supportive way. They feel lost and adrift without any mooring, often focusing on other things, like work or the children to ward off any fears they may have about their relationship that isn’t working well. They feel helpless to do anything about the problems that continue to increase, and suddenly it feels like the person they married is the wrong one for them. Instead of identifying problems to work on they decide to move on, make other decisions, make an attempt to leave the past behind, only to find that it isn’t the person and the circumstances of the marriage that was the problem but the absence of good tools to make any relationship, past or present, work.

There are certain requirements to being in a relationship that are absolutely necessary. Marriage requires not only self understanding but a fundamental understanding and acceptance of our partner. It requires we pay attention to our partner’s needs without giving ourselves up. It requires we be honest about what we need and share that information. Good communication, being able to manage anger and conflict, and being available to our partner to share everyday issues is critical to making a marriage or a personal relationship work well.

I feel that I can help you. I believe that you can learn to hear each other, be there for each other, and love and care for each other. If you want your relationship to work, there is a way. I’d like to help you if you will let me. I have helped many couples, some who have worked through the worst of times. In some ways it’s a wonderful journey not only for yourself, but for the people in your life that you love.
