With more than 3 years of direct supervision from Dr. Willliam A Griffin, himself a 3-year post-doctoral fellow of Dr. John M. Gottman, I have been doing individual and couple therapy since 1997. As a husband of 35 years in the same marriage, I have come to understand that happiness and satisfaction in marriage is something we experience through determination and commitment when we are able to face challenges together and resolve them. Not being able to do this is influenced by many factors--some outside ourselves that may or may not be within our control and some within ourselves that we may not realize are often within our control.

When we are hopeful and determined, we typically find ways to use our individual strengths and resources to resolve, or at least accept and cope with the problems we experience. But sometimes--and sometimes despite our best efforts--the gap widens between the way things are and the way we want things to be . We feel stuck. Hope and determination diminishes, and other feelings emerge--anxiety, panic, anger, frustration, depression, hopelessness, lack of motivation, or a host of other emotions we would prefer not to feel. We may even feel like giving up. We may begin to develop habits that are harmful to us--habits that distract us from our problems and that may temporarily make us feel better, but that nevertheless keep us stuck.

Working with both of you, I will help you create a happy and satisfying marriage that is unique to the two of you--a marriage that will emerge from the changed contributions that you will each make to it.
