My work with couples flows out of my belief that human beings were created to be in relationship. Healthy relationships involve interdependence, avoiding the extremes of both independence and dependency. Pre-marital counseling that provides honest information about relationship strengths and weaknesses is the first line of defense against later marital problems. I generally assess the relationship using the PREPARE-ENRICH inventories and genograms of the families of origin. I often meet individually with persons in couples’ therapy to explore issues in the family of origin and in their larger relationship networks, focusing especially on how they handle the balance of intimacy and solitude in their lives; their communication patterns; how they settle conflicts; and how they handle issues of power, control, autonomy, and authority. I believe that great unconscious wisdom guides the process of mate selection, and that healing the marriage begins with each person’s commitment to focus on understanding the other and daily choosing to “live in love.” As a Christian, I believe that healing the marriage often involves clarifying expectations of marriage, replacing a romantic myth with a reality-oriented view that recognizes we are all broken, and that to live in love is to accept brokenness in such a way that it encourages the other’s self-transformation.
