Premarital and marital counseling are my areas of specialization. Although I have counseled individuals, couples and families for twenty-five years, I find the most fulfillment in helping couples resolve their difficulties, and remember why they came together initially. Problems have ranged from affairs, parenting conflicts, financial stresses, in-laws, same-sex couples, blending families after remarriage, stresses of dual-career relationships, and sexual difficulties. Most couples are very discouraged when they seek out therapy, and often are on the verge of separation or divorce. I meet with the couple and ask each what they'd to happen differently in their relationship. I find out what they've each tried thus far that hasn't worked, and what has worked -- if only temporarily. I help them to talk with each other so that each is more likely to be heard and understood. I give homework assignments to reinforce what the couple is learning in their weekly therapy sessions. I focus on the individual's and the relationship's strengths. Together, we work towards the relationship they want.

Feedback I've received over the years from clients includes: "felt understood and supported," "felt encouraged," and "was challenged when needed to be." Couples have stated that they felt more understood by their partner and that their disagreements are less emotional than previously. It is particularly gratifying to hear clients feel "therapy saved their relationship."
