Your marriage can be better than you imagine, and, it can likely take less work than you believe. Most troubled couples lose hope that their marriage can improve. Couples in distress often wait too long to get help, and often seek help from professionals who lack a solid understanding of the dynamics of intimate relationships. Marriage is unlike any other relationship. For example, it is an interdependent relationship that is intended to be permanent and grow in intimacy. Consider parenting, it is a gradual process from dependence to independence for a child. Marriage should grow in oneness over the course of the marriage. Consider the happily married elderly couple that has learned to depend on each other for support and love as each ages. This is viewed by most as endearing. Counter this with the 30 year old well-functioning child who has remained dependent upon his parents. This child needs to be launched. It is bewildering, sad, if not hideous, that he is still living off his parents. We should have a similar sad reaction for the marriage that fails to grow in togetherness. Marriage is meant to be permanent and grow in oneness. I encourage you to seek a professional who is committed to making marriages work, grow in intimacy, and has the understanding of the unique aspects of healthy marriages, as well as has the experience to treat distressed relationships. My desire is to be that professional for your marriage. I have practiced counseling and psychology since 1988. Over the course of my career, my passion, training and graduate level teaching has centered strongly on understanding and honing the skills of effective marital counseling. I welcome the chance to help you restore your marriage, creating a growth in intimacy that continues over the life your marriage! Pax, Keith Bjorge, Psy.D. Clinical Psychologist
