I have been treating couples for over twenty years. My philosophical approach to treating heterosexual and same-sex couples involves the basic belief that maintaining lifelong relationships involves conscious effort and diligent work to keep the relationship vital and healthy. Couples often believe that marriage should be 'easier' if each partner loves the other and that there is no reason for anger if a relationship is truly a good one. Often I see my job as teaching couples what a 'healthy relationship' entails. Communication, compromise, understanding one's own needs and the needs of their partner, how to express and share intimacy, and accepting each other's differences are some of the important areas to understand to have a healthy, lifelong relationship. Couples I have treated have struggled with addiction, infidelity, betrayal, "falling out of love," sexual dysfunction, and other presenting symptoms.
