My fundamental commitment to couples who may be struggling with relationship challenges is to do everything possible to help them discover why it makes sense to remain together, while also recognizing that the actual decision properly belongs to each couple. I also believe in the value of marriage as an entity that transcends either spouse, while also affirming the legitimacy of each spouse’s desires. I have helped couples in crisis come back from the brink of divorce, I have helped couples recover from the trauma of infidelity, and I have helped remarried couples navigate the unique challenges of stepfamily life. I am a certified Relationship Enhancement® Marital/Couples Therapist, Supervisor and Trainer, I train others in this method, and I have authored a book entitled Relationship Enhancement Therapy: Healing Through Deep Empathy and Intimate Dialogue (Routledge, 2005).

I always work with couples on two levels. First, I teach core communication, problem-conflict resolution and behavior change skills, along with a couple’s dialogue process. The couple then uses the skills and dialogue process to address the specific issues in their marriage. My job is to facilitate the couple’s dialogues by helping each person go deeper in understanding his/her spouse’s experience.
