My enthusiasm for and optimism about working with couples is increasing as I age. Perhaps that's because I more and more can see the value of commitment, connection and intimacy. I have worked with hundreds of married/committed, heterosexual and same sex couples and have become convinced that there is no relationship more life-enhancing than a rich, intimate partnership. I love to help alienated couples find ways to reconnect and confused couples work towards a shared, clear vision. When you come into my office, you can expect a warm and encouraging meeting as you help me understand you and your relationship. I will be asking questions that give me a picture of your relationship's strengths and challenges and then we will work as a team to develop a picture of the outcomes you desire. Then we get to work to heal past hurts, practice effective communication skills, and deepen empathy for each other. For many reasons, couples often wait till there's a relationship emergency before they seek help and that's understandable--who isn't afraid of the unknown? However, if, before there's a crisis, you have the sense that things can and should be better between you, I encourage you to listen to that wisdom and come in for a consultation soon. An additional area of interest for me is premarital or pre-commitment counseling. It may be difficult, at the very exciting early stage of a committed relationship to even be willing to think about the challenges of marriage. However, the average American marriage lasts only 7.5 years, with over 50% of marriages ending in divorce. How does one move from creating a dream wedding to creating a satisfying and lasting marriage? Pre-marital or pre-commitment counseling may be a good thing for you to consider if you would like to - increase your awareness of the strengths and vulner- abilties you bring to each other, - work together to create a relationship vision, - anticipate and pepare for your likely challenges, - understand the influences of your family experiences on your relationship, and - learn about each others' "love languages" so that you can deliberately nurture the special intimacy that is the glue of a happy, committed relationship. I would be happy to talk with you about how this early counseling could be helpful for you and your partner.
