My work with couples is largely informed by the work of Harville Hendrix and Imago Therapy. Marriage is an opportunity for and a journey toward greater healing and wholeness. In our relationship with our spouse we experience the opportunity to heal some of the wounds inflicted during childhood and later life. Healing enables us to know greater fullness as a human being. The inevitable differences and conflicts that occur in marriage are the seedbeds for deepened understanding and intimacy to grow. I do not work with couples individually, but with both people in the room. I believe both people need to hear where the other person is coming from, to see as much as possible through their eyes, and understand their perspective--understanding does not imply agreement. To ensure accurate listening and to create an atmosphere of emotional safety, I have couples practice active listening skills: mirroring, summarizing, extending empathy. I seek to connect the traumas and frustrations--the woundings--of childhood with the current conflicts in the marriage. As one partner deepens their understanding of the fragile and wounded places of their partner, a new respect and concern can enter the relationship as that partner stretches themselves to help their partner heal.
