My Treatment Approach: Marriage is a Gift
When we cannot be ourselves in the presence of our partner, that is usually a good indicator that the relationship needs nurturing.  Marriage is a gift.  The nurturing of that gift is part of the ongoing growth process in which we become the best version of ourselves.  Thus, relationship repair is not something to approach grudgingly.  The process, when put in its proper perspective, is fulfilling and meets our most basic needs at an organic level.  My role in couples counseling as a therapist is to assist with this process of “becoming.”

The Relationship is the Client: It's Bigger than Both of You
I refer to the “relationship,” because in marriage counseling, the relationship is the client, not one partner over the other.  I assist the relationship by helping each partner create space in which there is mutual respect.  This doesn’t typically mean a life devoid of disagreements.  It doesn’t even require mutual interests.  It requires a willingness on each person’s part to invest in the relationship, nurture it on an ongoing basis and do so in a manner that holds respect for the other.  This environment is fertile soil for individual growth and a healthy relationship.  At the heart of every secure relationship is the underlying need to feel that our partner is there for us.

Humans are Built to Thrive with Connection
Long-term committed relationships reflect the highest state of well-being for individuals simply because, as humans, we are wired for connection.  Most of my experience in family counseling has been in helping to repair relationships affected by substance use and/or trauma in which partners and other family members experience betrayal, infidelity, trust issues, abandonment, emotional or physical abuse, emotional neglect, lack of communication or other challenges. These are not insurmountable.  In fact, they are often the surface behaviors that reflect symptoms. My task is to help you identify negative patterns that keep you from revealing who you are and what you need with the person you cherish the most.

Emotional Regulation and Boundaries Are Key
I’ve had most success in my treatment approach prioritizing connection and respect as part of the relationship repair process.  Learning to live with difference and manage our own emotional reactivity are disciplines informed by my training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), EMDR, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Brainspotting, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Accelerated Resolution Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.

Most Marriages Can Be Saved: Humans Are Built to Overcome Adversity
Most couples find relief in marriage counseling knowing that there are concrete steps they can take to preserve their commitment.  Walking away from one of the most beautiful aspects of the human experience just to avoid conflict is one of the worst reasons to do so because the relief of running away is only temporary.  We learn to be resilient when we invest in the long haul and develop the tools we need overcome challenges.  Learning the gift of repair is vital to all of our relationships.
