About  Brian Feldman

Relationships are vital to mental and emotional wellbeing. The marriage relationship is typically the most important one over the course of an individual lifespan.  Investing in the long-term stability and success of this relationship through marriage counseling is one of the smartest things anyone can do.  Strong marital relationships feature love, support and encouragement both in practically and emotionally.  Marriage therapy can help to improve listening skills, open communication without judgment, mutual trust and respect, and the development of stronger connections through consistent time spent together in healthy activities.

Couples counseling should enhance the natural benefits of the relationship which include lower stress, improved physical health, development of healthier behaviors or habits, greater sense of purpose or meaning in life and overall longevity.  Couples therapy or family therapy may be needed when communication has become generally negative or even toxic, when one or both partners are considering or are involved in extramarital relationships physically or emotionally, when partners begin to function more like roommates than spouses/lovers, when conflict resolution skills are weak or absent, when separation or divorce seems like the only option or when the relationship remains solely for the sake of the children.

Premarital counseling is an excellent way of preparing for a successful long-term marriage.  Couples who complete premarital counseling are better equipped to avoid and/or handle the inevitable challenges they will face related to finances, social interactions, extended family, expectations, etc.

I’ve enjoyed working with couples throughout my tenure as a counselor.  My work with individuals on issues ranging from trauma recovery, depression and anxiety has enabled me to bring solutions into couples’ therapy that can help each partner understand the specific difficulties of the other.  My approach is to see each partner individually once prior to working with the couple together.  This allows each individual the opportunity to fully explore their thoughts and feelings about the relationship and develop a working rapport with me prior to working through difficult issues with their partner in marriage counseling.  I use a variety of techniques designed to promote higher level communication with deeper understanding of one another’s experiences as well as teaching conflict resolution skills that can be used beyond couple’s therapy to resolve future differences.

While there are no guarantees, I have seen success with couples working to overcome severe betrayals including infidelity and financial irresponsibility.  I’ve also seen couples who are struggling to blend families in second marriages work through what seemed to be irreconcilable differences after working to improve communication, compromise successfully on parenting issues and learn to teach their children these same skills.

I believe that regardless of the state of your relationship, there is always hope for improving it.  If you simply seek to be proactive and work on skills to help you when things are difficult or if you need to recover from the pain of betrayal, I believe you can work with guidance toward the wonderful marital relationship you’ve always wanted.

Please call or email me to discover how my marriage counseling sessions can help you get from where you are in your relationship to where you really want to be.
