I’ve been working with couples for over 40 years and been married for longer then that. I'd built a thriving group practice with my wife which we then sold. Besides being a well trained and compassionate relationship therapist, I think I know something about what it takes to stay married, have an enriching relationship, and respectfully work together in a family business.
Since 2010 I've had a solo individual and couple's counseling practice. After all these years, I find practicing counseling with my clients still deeply meaningful. Some 60% of my counseling practice is working with younger and mid-life couples, many of whom are dealing with infidelity in its many forms and family issues involving children and aging parents. I think I know something about what it takes to keep a marriage alive when dealing with the problems we may create for ourselves or that "life" throws at us.
I'm also seeing older couples, even aging couples, who are negotiating career retirement, down-sizing and relocation issues, including dealing with questions related to health and end of life planning. "Negotiating" is an apt term when partners may see these important issues differently.
A healthy marriage seems to take partners who are willing to have a healthy respect for differences and to give consideration to each other’s basic personality and needs. Where that is limited, I try to help couples learn to talk with one another to resolve issues dividing them. to end hurtful repetitious patterns so they can again enjoy one another. For me, the experience of attraction, finding strength in being a couple is spiritual in its essence.
