About Dr. Carlos Durana

Couples Therapy

I love helping couples and individuals achieve their goals and desires. I offer a caring, accepting, and healing environment where clients can explore, understand each other, work through problems, resolve conflicts, and create solutions that expand the potential for growth and well-being in their relationships.

My resource-based approach in couples counseling includes:

  • helping clients develop effective communication and conflict management skills;
  • teaching relationship building blocks which generate understanding, intimacy, satisfaction, respect, affection, appreciation and mutual support; and
  • supporting couples’ efforts in transforming attitudes and behaviors to improve relationship satisfaction.

Beyond helping couples break out of negative cycles, the ultimate aim of couples counseling is to enhance intimacy, trust, satisfaction and love, and develop ways of relating that support each other’s core identities and life purposes.

Integrative Approaches to Marital Counseling

I am a proponent of integrative and holistic therapies that honor the mind-body connection and its impact on well-being, health, and happiness in relationships. I attend to the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of the couple, not just a set of symptoms or problems. I emphasize teaching skills that develop inner resources for successful coping in marriage, as well as life in general. I use a variety of approaches, but the particular method used has to meet the specific needs of the couple. They include:

  • emphasizing what has worked;
  • doing more behaviors that create success;
  • discovering strengths and resources beneath the relationship symptoms;
  • redirecting attention to the couple’s hopes and aspirations; and
  • developing behaviors that increase relationship satisfaction and happiness.

Treating the Whole Person

When integrated, our thoughts, emotions, behaviors and bodies are tools to help promote healthy relationships, lifestyles, habits, and choices. My expertise in body-mind and mindfulness approaches can address the connection between problems, stresses and health concerns. As a clinical psychologist and counselor with over 27 years of experience in dealing with many concerns, I have led classes and published research in psychoeducation, self-development, intimacy, and other topics related to couples therapy.
