About  Brad Wasserman

If you're like most couples who contact me, you'll say you have problems communicating. You may point to other concerns in your relationship. Perhaps one of you is unfaithful. You might have differences in parenting styles. One or both of you may feel neglected. And financial problems may be adding stress to the other issues you're grappling with.

In almost instances, these kinds of issues are symptoms of the larger problem, the one that keeps you from working through your issues together. The primary issue is -- you've lost the ability to resolve your conflicts successfully.

A conflict is simply a disagreement or a difference in opinion. Even in the healthiest relationships, it's not possible to get rid of all your differences, to eliminate all of your conflicts. But it is possible to resolve conflicts, to resolve differences, in a healthy way that brings the two of you closer.

Successful conflict resolution means working through issues in a way that both of you are satisfied with the outcome -- without either of you getting hurt along the way. Every time a conflict remains unresolved, the resentment between the two of you grows. And as those resentments "stack up" you'll find that you and your partner are becoming more distant and disconnected. Over time, you don't see each other, connect with each other, in the way you used to when your relationship was fresh and new.

You may find yourself continually dissatisfied, more easily irritated or agitated by your partner. You are often closer to your "tipping point," so that even small issues turn into larger problems. Some couples maintain emotional distance quietly, while others argue more openly. But both ways fail to resolve conflict. Both ways are destructive to your relationship.

When you work with me you'll learn the skills you need to resolve conflict in healthy ways. When you're able to resolve conflict well, you'll be able to handle the issues that arise. And when you are able to do that, there is no need for counseling.

My style is open, engaged, and active and I recognize the importance to be fair-minded and to treat both of you in a balanced way. I'll help you to develop the skills to communicate around conflict successfully – to resolve issues in a way that both of you feel good about coming together when conflicts or other problems arise. As you do, you find the resentment and anger in your relationship fading while the connection between you grows.
