About  Jan Weiss

Imagine sharing your most private thoughts and feelings, safely, and without risk, so that you get to know yourself more deeply. Neuroscience teaches us how emotions affect our behavior, how they are stored in the body, and how negative emotions can be healed. In my work, I utilize techniques that focus on the relationship and the feedback mechanisms between the mind and the body in order to promote deeper and more complete healing.

I help couples and families recognize patterns of behavior that contribute to misunderstanding, tension and conflict. As you learn what motivates these patterns, you begin to hear each other with a greater sense of understanding. You begin to know each other more deeply and gain clarity on how you would like to proceed.  In working with couples I utilize mindfulness and Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy. In Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, you learn how to communicate your needs instead of reacting in anger and accusation - then you are able to connect in a positive, intimate and loving way. We are predisposed to seek comfort and care from those we love, especially when we are wounded, scared, sad, or angry. When we can't or are afraid to seek the care that we need from those we love, we suffer.  Sometimes when we suffer, we get angry and express our anger. When we express our anger, we are not communicating our need for care, support and connection, and most likely we receive an angry response that leaves us feeling alone and misunderstood. The test of a relationship is in the answer to a fundamental question; are you really there for me? So the overriding goal in therapy with couples is to help you regain (and sometimes gain for the first time) intimacy and secure attachment with each other. Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) was developed by Susan Johnson, Ed. D. and Les Greenberg, Ph.D. in the 1980's.  This model of couple therapy focuses on emotion as the essential transforming element in couples, rather than the content of the specific problem a couple is facing. EFT emphasizes primary attachment needs and emotions as a means of resolving patterns of behavior that contribute to misunderstanding, tension and conflict.  Supported by a substantial body of empirical research and known to be one of the most successful approaches to couple therapy, EFT helps to create strong, secure emotional attachment bonds in adult love relationships.

In addition to extensive training, my work is also informed by many rewarding life experiences. Looking back, it is clear that my life’s work prepared me to become a therapist. All the various jobs that I’ve held have helped me to understand and to relate with people from all walks of life and with all sorts of challenges that life presents. I served in the U.S. Navy, drove a cab, was a successful business executive, and am a husband and a father who understands the joys and challenges of family life. For the past 22 years I have been practicing Mindfulness Meditation, which has helped me to listen deeply and to speak softly and without judgment. I feel privileged to be able to do this work.
