About Dr. Dena Ray

Do you believe that people have the power to change? Surprisingly, conflict in relationships can be an avenue to growth and healing. I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist that feels a calling to couples’ counseling. With over 30 years of experience in my field, I can appreciate the unique challenges that each relationship struggles with, and I am here to help.

Addiction, Infidelity, and Separation

Even when going through such serious issues as these, I believe marriage and couples therapy can truly work. Frustration, sadness and anger are very normal emotions that I see while working through these areas with clients. I am very well trained in the many different approaches that each relationship may need to work toward healing and unity, and move forward to lives that are rich with fulfillment.

Anxiety, Depression, and Emotional Disturbance

It’s obvious that relationships are some of the most important sources of meaning in our lives; they profoundly affect our happiness and well-being. I can provide a confidential, non-judgmental setting to talk through how your emotions, and the unique challenges they present, affect your relationship. I am an active and engaged listener, as well as a warm and genuine person. I love to recommend books and resources for those that are eager to learn more and do their research.

Most couples will develop a routine or habitual “dance” of certain behaviors and reactions in their life together. These behaviors show assumptions or expectations of your partner that you may not even know that you have. By working with you to analyze these behaviors, we can slow your interactions down and identify the underlying causes of these assumptions and expectations—often it has to do with your and your partner’s life experiences and family of origin—and then compassion and understanding for yourself and your significant other can grow and lead to clearer communication and new, healthier habits.

Intimacy and Sexual Issues

Past hurts and lack of forgiveness, jealousy and mistrust, and communication issues are just a few of many reasons that a couple may experience problems in their sex life. I can help you as a couple to figure out what the true cause of the dysfunction may be. One of my primary means to help steer a relationship in the right direction is to identify your strengths as a couple, and focus on what’s strong instead of what’s wrong. This type of focus sets you up for success not only in this area of your relationship, but in all other areas as well.

Certified Discernment Counselor

When a couple is considering divorce but is not convinced that it is the right choice, I offer short-term sessions called Discernment Counseling. I will help you make the decision to either:

1. Restore your marriage
2. Move toward divorce, or
3. Take some time and make the decision later.

Perhaps one spouse is ‘leaning in’—desiring the marriage to survive—and the other spouse may be ‘leaning out’—not convinced that they wish to remain married.

I will help you not to solve the issues in your relationship, but take a close look at the problems and help you decide if they are solvable. Discernment Counseling is for couples, but an important aspect is the one-on-one conversations you’ll have with me since each person is coming from a very different place.

My goal will be to help each of you to focus on the ways that you may have contributed to the problems you’re experiencing, which is a valuable understanding not only for this relationship, but any future relationships you may have.

Some other relationship areas that I am experienced in include, but are not limited to:

  • Premarital Counseling
  • Family, Co-Parenting, and Parent-Child Conflicts
  • Life Transitions, Women’s Issues and Stress
