About Dr. Geraldine Kerr

I believe that couples who specifically seek the services of a licensed therapist in marriage and family therapy are making a choice about their desire to do all that they can to protect, preserve, strengthen and support each other through difficult times in their relationship.  Sharing that value, my work with you becomes a partnership where together, we identify and learn more about issues and dynamics disconnecting you from feeling close and attached as you would like to be, and perhaps once were.

Relationships are always undergoing change and development, a tribute and statement to life that exists in each one individually, as well as to life that exists between the couple as a relationship. Marriage requires two individuals to move from "I" to "We" which is no easy task!  It takes time and practice to develop skills necessary to relate to each other in respectful, thoughtful ways where one or the other does not feel they "lost", while the other "wins".  In fact, marriage is about each of you alternately "winning" and "losing", in a spirit of creating balance and harmony in the relationship.

Tension and stress in a relationship is not inherently problematic; rather, it is the way the couple works with the tension that leads to constructive or destructive outcomes.  Stated differently, tension, conflict, and difference of opinion are not negative,; rather, they are invitations to open the door, to learn more about what each of you is saying, wanting, and needing in proactive rather than reactive, ways.

From a family systems perspective we understand that we all learn rules and roles in our family of origin. How you were shaped and molded in your family of origin may be vastly different from the experience of the other.  Conflict and distress are opportunities to learn more about what is driving current behavior, for purposes of going beyond prior learning to create the partnership that you want now!  Using a variety of research-based modalities including family systems, Gottman methods, AEDP, Imago communication skills, marriage education enhancement, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or working through issues of abuse or trauma and loss from the past, most couples gain a clearer understanding of dynamics between them leading to conflict. Having gained this information, couples are then in a position to create lasting and meaningful change between them to capture and enjoy the relationship they want.

Whether newly married, mid-marriage, or empty-nesters, all marriages go through ups and downs. It has been my clinical experience that marriages hitting their lowest points through crises are often the ones that heal and expand, creating presents and futures filled with joy and satisfaction.   It is my hope that within my practice you will find professionalism, empathy, caring and respect that will enable you to feel open, supported, and relaxed.  Together, we will help build strong attachments between you, so that you may enjoy the relationship that means a lot to you.   Please call me to discuss your specific needs in Morristown, NJ at 978 829-6803 or Hackettstown, NJ at (908)  813-8232. I look forward to speaking with you soon!
