About Dr. Philip Greenwood

Relationships are essential; they are in large part what makes us human. Your relationships with your partner or other family members have a powerful impact on the way you react to life around you.  I have been helping individuals, couples, and families like yours to preserve meaningful relationships, restore them to health, build new relationships, and nurture those to become as happy and fulfilled as possible for over 40 years.  This has involved helping people like you improve their relationships by helping them deal with unexpected life changes, grief and loss, trauma, parent-child concerns, anxiety, depression, and other concerns within the context of their lives together.

Marriage and family therapy offers a unique approach to understanding personal, relational, and family concerns.  Competent, professional marriage therapy carefully considers your life context and circumstances to help you create the life you and your partner want together.

I will approach your unique concerns by understanding how they are influenced by and influence your relationships and life circumstances.  I start by working with you to help you identify your hidden strengths so that you can improve the ways you interact with each other to achieve the happy and successful marriage that you want.

Unlike many therapists who work with couples, marriage and family therapy has been my life's work and passion.  I have an MS degree in Family and Child Development from East Carolina University and a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from Virginia Tech.  I have been active in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy since 1978 and the Virginia Association for Marriage and Family Therapy since 1980.  Greater than half of my private practice clients have come seeking marriage therapy and many more clients have come with concerns regarding their marriage or other important relationships.  Whether you are looking for premarital counseling, marriage counseling, couples counseling, couples therapy, marriage therapy, or help with your current non-marital relationship, I have the training and experience to quickly identify the blocks to your happiness and the skills to help you have the relationship that you want.  Call or email me today to take the next step toward a happier and more fulfilling life together.
