About  Sherry Rossiter

Healthy, happy marriages don't just happen by accident.  Successful marriages require care and compassion, frequent and effective communication, and a willingness to compromise at times.  As a licensed professional counselor for 28 years, I have worked with many couples of all ages whose marriages have become turbulent and unhappy due to lack of care and attention, infidelity, financial problems, out-of-control children, and other serious issues. Many times, couples don't fully understand the true issues threatening their marriage until they come for marriage counseling.

I believe most marriages can be repaired, but both parties need to be willing to do the emotional work and make the necessary behavioral and/or attitudinal changes in order for that to happen.  Unfortunately, many couples do not seek counseling until so much damage has been done to the relationship that it becomes very difficult to forgive one another. As a Christian, I believe in the sanctity of marriage, and I believe in the power of forgiveness.  Even in cases of divorce, I have worked with couples to heal emotionally and learn to forgive.

It has been my experience that many couples are so focused on what they perceive as "wrong" with the marriage that they completely miss seeing what's "right" (and working well) in the relationship.  As a marriage counselor, I spend a lot of time working on effective communication techniques and helping the couple better understand their individual strengths and weaknesses, so they can work more collaboratively as a couple.  If needed, I have relationship assessments and surveys that can be completed to help the couple better understand each other's perspective and what is working or not working in their marriage.

In addition to being a counselor in private practice, I've been teaching an online undergraduate college course in Marriage & Family for 10 years for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Worldwide Campus, so I have a lot of exposure to dating rituals, marriage customs, and cultural expectations in other countries.  I also take continuing education courses each year to stay abreast of the latest research and best practices  in couples counseling.
