Taking the first step to reach out to a counselor is a serious and significant decision made by a couple in order to potentially improve upon or reconstruct their relationship. My strategy, from the initial meeting, is to explore that drive in each partner and determine their individual goals in tandem with their goals for the relationship. Developing a plan that promotes growth, understanding, and togetherness within the couple is my first goal. My focus throughout treatment is to determine how to assist each partner along the path toward obtaining a healthier, more solidified relationship with their other half.
Understanding the journey that each individual has taken prior to the current relationship helps to reveal influences, values, and patterns throughout life that have likely been impacting the present relationship. My belief is that both partners benefit from an enhanced understanding of themselves and the other in order to establish a sense of "us" in their relationship; this is created through discussion and decisions about the norms each wants to establish instead of blindly following the past norms that have been carried along to this relationship from each partner's past.
I seek to assist couples that have suffered through infidelity, family conflict, major life transitions, changes in intimacy, and individual mental health difficulties, along with the most commonly stated issues of poor communication and mistrust. Meeting with a counselor prior to deciding to divorce or split-up is a potentially life-changing decision. It can be incredibly helpful to explore how the relationship made it to that point and what potential changes can be made going forward.
I look forward to the opportunity to help your relationship strengthen and grow.
