Successful counseling is built on a positive and trusting relationship, much as successful living is dependent on trusting, healthy relationships. I bring a broad array of treatment tools to my work including gestalt, object relations and psychodynamic theory. Most importantly I bring myself; my heart, my humor, my understanding, knowledge and years of experience. The counseling process can open painful places, but there is no reason why laughter can’t be part of the journey. I work to make our time together comfortable, exciting and engaging.
You may feel unsure of where to begin or even what to ask. There is no right way. I will work with you to identify the best ways to achieve your goals. It is my goal for people to leave therapy with a deeper understanding and appreciation of their uniqueness and wisdom. To feel empowered in daily life.
The human body/mind connection is an exploration. Why do people sometimes get sick when exposed to illness but not other times? I strive to give individuals the tools to successfully move forward in their life’s, to recognize old myths about their life and have updated more accurate stories to remember about personal strength, wisdom and love.
Over the years I have been touched by the profound experiences adoptees have. There are so many roads to travel, often without the support of knowing where you belong, to whom you belong. Not looking like anyone, not feeling apart of your adoptive family. Or perhaps feeling very connected to your family and guilty for being curious. In my counseling practice in Portland, Oregon, I work to explore the unmet needs and heretofore unspoken feelings regarding the status of being adopted. These are always profound stories and the feelings run deep.
In conversations with individuals, families and couples where adoption is a thread in their family history we consider the question of “the search.” Making the decision to start the search can be very complex. I will help walk you through the considerations and support you in making a choice that fits for you. I will also help you prepare for possible outcomes, be it successful reuniting or painful frustration of rejection or being blocked by bureaucratic regulations.
