You are not alone if you are feeling your relationship needs help and counseling. Marriages and intimate relationships can fill our lives with joy, laughter, friendship and love. At the same time, they have their moments of sadness, anger, possibly even hopelessness. It is not worth giving up on, and couples therapy can help you both regain and strengthen your love and passion.
I have been working with couples experiencing relationship and sexual problems for 30 years. My goals are to help couples reduce levels of alienation and animosity, identify the relationship patterns that maintain problems, and develop new patterns that work better.
While most sessions are joint, I generally do individual sessions as part of my assessment and may use them over the course of the therapy to work on a specific issue. My therapeutic approach is oriented in the here and now, and I think it is important to understand the experience of family each member of the couple brings into the current relationship from their family of origin. I use a variety of therapeutic approaches, but tend to view therapy as an active process: much of the work of treatment takes place at home, between sessions. I give homework! I usually like to see couples every one to two weeks initially, depending on the severity of the problems and our mutual schedules. After that, the frequency of the sessions is tailored to meet specific treatment goals.
